Mauricio “Shogun” Rua was a broken-down legend years ago. These days, he’s a zombie – which is exactly the wrong kind of person to take on Corey Anderson.
Shogun takes up position in front of Anderson with his chin down and hands up, and commences digging into his thighs with kicks. The American responds by winging some hard leather in his direction, and the bout becomes a boxing match. It’s hard to say who lands more, but in the final seconds Shogun drops him with a fist to the dome, and Anderson is saved by the bell.
All cobwebs have been shaken off by the start of the next round, and Anderson comes out throwing combo that Rua expertly blocks. Anderson switches to grappling mode and puts his opponent on his back, but it takes just a few seconds for Shogun to get back to his feet. The American gets another takedown, and Shogun gets one himself in the final ten seconds of the round.
Anderson muscles Shogun to the ground early in Round 3, and though the former PRIDE FC and UFC champ makes it back to his feet, the young buck manages another takedown and another. It’s likely Anderson took the round with his wrestling, but did he do enough to win any other rounds?
