The most interesting thing about this, the “main event” of the FOX Sports 1 prelims, isn’t the fact that Matt Brown is pure violence or that Demian Maia is one of the best jiu-jitsu guys to ever do MMA. No, it’s that Brown embraced the role of villain and flipped off the partisan crowd at the weigh-ins yesterday.
Within the first 30 seconds of the bout, Maia has taken Brown down against the fence. Brown rises, but Maia takes his back while standing. The duo goes down, and Brown is stuck in a body-triangle fending off the choke. Through extreme patience and flawless technique, Brown survives, and even winds up in Maia’s guard by round’s end.
The takedown comes within 30 seconds of the second, and yet again Maia is on Brown like a backpack. The round plays out almost exactly as the previous one, with Brown even ending up on top in the final seconds.
For the briefest moments in the beginning of Round 3, Brown is successful at sprawling and brawling, but when he tries to deliver some punches when the Brazilian is beneath him, Maia uses that as an opportunity to tangle him up and once more take his back. This time, despite what Brown does, Maia’s choke is inevitable, and the tap comes in the final 30 seconds.
Result: Demian Maia def. Matt Brown via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) at 4:31, R3
