The UFC 188 weigh-ins are in the books, with each of the 22 fighters scheduled making their contracted limits. That mean all of tomorrow’s fights in Mexico City — including the heavyweight main event between Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum, to decide an undisputed champion — are ready to go.
Both the particulars addressed the crowd in brief interviews after weighing in successfully.
“There can be only one champion,” Werdum, the UFC interim heavyweight champion, addressed the crowd Spanish. He then “Ossu!”
“It’s a dream for me to fight here,” UFC heavyweight champion Velasquez said, also in Spanish. “I will win for you!”
The Mexico City crowd was among the more raucous in recent memory, cheering on the Mexican and Mexican-American fighters (like Vasquez) and booing many of their opponents (like Werdum). They also offered a nice ovation for Angela Hill, who came to the scale wearing a personalized Mexican national football team top to face Tecia Torres.
