The traditional post-fight bonuses were announced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship after UFC 183 last night at a press event.
Thales Leites was the biggest winner — landing both a “Performance of the Night” and a “Fight of the Night” bonus. Each honor nets the Brazilian middleweight an extra $50,000.
Leites had scored a dramatic come-from-behind victory against Tim Boetsch to record his eighth straight victory.
Leites had struggled with the American Boetch’s striking in the early going, but recovered to attain dominant position in a scramble on the mat. In the second round, Leites secured an arm triangle which rendered Boetsch unconscious.
Boetsch, whose MMA record is now 18-8, will also receive a $50,000 bonus for the “Fight of the Night.” Leites improved to 25-4 in his MMA career.
Leites also won a “Performance of the Night” bonus in his last UFC appearance, a knockout win over Francis Carmont.
The last post-fight bonus winner was another Brazilian, Thiago Alves — who also had to overcome some early adversity to earn a victory.
Alves was under siege in the first round of his welterweight bout against Jordan Mein. The Canadian “Young Gun” attacked with a variety of punches and kicks to Alves’ head and body, and seemed on the way to his 30th MMA win. But Alves rallied, and scored a strong round kick to the body in the second round which floored Mein. Alves followed up with punches until the referee stepped in.
Mein fell to 29-10 in his MMA career with the loss, while Alves improves to 21-9.
Both bouts were on the pay-per-piew main card of UFC 183, which was held at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
