“He’s going to be fine, but he’s definitely not fighting Saturday.”
So goes an unnamed source from the UFC, bouncing around media outlets — regarding Renan Barão.
Earlier today, the former UFC bantamweight champion Barão, listed among the top pound-for-pound in the world before a devastating loss to TJ Dillashaw earlier in the year, is said to have struggled mightily with a weight cut. After having fainted in the hours preceding the weigh-in, according to UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, and was pulled from UFC 177.
“Safety has to come first,” Fertitta said, per Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports. “We just wanted to make sure he was all right. My understanding is that he is [OK] and that everyone was being extra cautious, so he was taken to the hospital to be checked.”
Joe Soto was called in at the last minute, weighed in successfully, and will battle TJ Dillashaw tomorrow for the UFC bantamweight title.
In other news, Henry Cejudo backed out of his UFC 177 bout prior to weigh-in. His bout with Scott Jorgenson was scrapped completely. Cejudo, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in freestyle wrestling, had “undisclosed medical reasons” for pulling out of the event.
Other than that… everyone weighed in successfully.
