Robbie Lawler made a statement tonight at UFC 173 in Las Vegas, dominating nearly every minute of his bout against Jake Ellenberger en route to a round three TKO victory.
Ellenberger, who was ranked fifth in the UFC’s welterweight rankings and among the top ten of most MMA journalists, was ineffective against Lawler’s “technical brawler” style. Lawler landed kicks to the head and legs to begin the bout, before landing hand combinations throughout the stanza.
Lawler, who entered the bout a -210 favorite, kept up the pressure in rounds two and three. Two Ellenberger takedowns failed to turn the tide in round two, and a big Lawler knee followed by punches ended the affair at 3:06 of round three.
Lawler advanced to 23-10-1 with the victory. He would declare to Joe Rogan in a post-fight interview, “I’m coming for that title!” Ellenberger drops to 29-8 with the loss.
