UFC 172 Weigh-Ins: A Production Goof & A Fight Cancelled, But All Fighters Make Weight

The UFC 172 weigh-ins went off without a hitch today. At least, as far as the fighters were concerned.

There was a minor slip-up in production for the third-to-last bout, as UFC announcer Joe Rogan announced the names of the fighters of the co-main event, Anthony Johnson and Phil Davis, instead of Luke Rockhold and Tim Boetsch. But, Rogan quickly made the correction with a smile.

All fighters made weight for the event. The Baltimore crowd didn’t seem to pick many favorites, offering seemingly about the same reception to each combatant.

The only fighter who looked like s/he could have had an issue with the cut was Luke Rockhold, who looked tired if not dehydrated.  Andre Fili made the sign of the cross before his weigh-in.  Joseph Benavidez ran out in bright blue briefs and no top rather than the usual attire of shorts and T-shirt. He had a big smile, but the Octagon girls behind him didn’t seem so impressed.

Both of the fighters to be featured in the evening’s main event were interviewed briefly after their successful weigh-in. Glover Teixeira, who will challenge Jon Jones for Jones’ UFC Light Heavyweight championship, remarked, “He’s a great fighter, he has all the tools. But I’m going to take that belt away from him tomorrow.”

Jones, the longtime champion, offered a shout out to the US military, and “the black and purple, the Ravens of Baltimore,” before predicting his own victory. Jones’ two brothers, Chandler and Arthur, who both play professional football in the NFL, accompanied him to the stage.

The bout between lightweights Joe Ellenberger and Vagner Rocha was scratched due to Rocha reporting an injury. It was rumored that Donald Cerrone would replace Rocha to face Ellenberger, despite fighting only a week ago — but that has proven false.
