The fourth bout of UFC 172, and the penultimate of the Fox Sports 1 preliminary broadcast, was a grueling brawl at lightweight, which saw an old Japanese legend rise again.
Toyko’s Takanori “The Fireball Kid” Gomi fired his trademark power shots throughout the bout’s three rounds, bloodying the face of his opponent, Isaac Vallie-Flagg of New Mexico, and earning a unanimous decision victory.
Gomi, a slight betting favorite, switched from southpaw to orthodox for some particularly effective combinations in the second. His left hook to the body shook Vallie-Flagg. But the product of Jackson’s MMA held tough and kept the bout close. A stunned Gomi was shaken by punches early in the third stanza, particularly a series of hooks following a Vallie-Flagg takedown. But the action belonged to Gomi more often than not.
Scores came in at 29-28 from all three ringside judges.
