Our friends at ZUFFA present UFC 171 tonight at the America Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas — featuring an in-depth look at the new-look welterweight division, including a bout for the vacant UFC Welterweight Championship between Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler.
In addition, former Interim Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit is featured in the co-main event against a fellow top contender in Tyron Woodley, and former title challenger Jake Shields takes on the man dubbed the division’s “X-Factor” in Hector Lombard.

Middleweights : Sean Strickland defeated Robert “Bubba” McDaniel by submission (rear naked choke) at 4:33 of round one.
Flyweights : Justin Scoggins defeated Will Campuzano by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Light Heavyweights : Ovince St. Preux vs. Nikita Krylov
Round One: Krylov attacking with leg and body kicks to begin. St Preux hits a round kick of his own and ducks into a takedown, right into side control. Krylov tries hanging on to a guillotine choke but St. Preux positions in the “Jason Von Flue” choke, putting Krylov to sleep!
Ovince St. Preux defeats Nikita Krylov by technical submission (Jason Von Flue choke) at 1:29 of round one.
Welterweights : Jake Shields vs. Hector Lombard
Round One: Lombard swings Shields to the mat but Shields back up quickly. Shields tries a head kick and is pushed to the canvas again. Shields with an inside leg kick on the southpaw, but Lombard tags with overhand left. They circle about and Lombard lands another punching combination. Shields clinches but Lombard shrugs off his takedown attempt. Big overhand from Lombard lands. Lombard sprawls out of Shields’ takedown attempt and lands some more punches. Shields is bleeding around the left eye. Uppercuts and a big kick from Lombard. Shields tumbles to his guard and struggles to control Lombard’s posture. Lombard and Shields trade insignificant shots in Shields’ guard as time expires. 10-9 Round for Lombard.
Round Two: They trade with Lombard landing a hard left. Lombard with a strong foot sweep, showing off his judo acumen. Shields in half-guard, then full closed guard. Punches to head and body from Lombard, but they’re pretty inactive and the ref stands ’em up, about two and a half minutes left. They circle, Shields shoots, Lombards sprawls. Punch from Lombard, up-kick from Shields. Crowd is getting restless as the action slows. The two stand, Shields shows the jab and right high kick. Beautiful hip throw from Lombard, right into a kesa-gatame. Shields re-positions his guard, and time expires. 10-9 round for Lombard.
Round Three: Slow stand up action to begin. Rather flagrant groin kick by Lombard prompts the referee to halt the action. Lombard with a takedown as they re-start. Shields in guard tries to posture up for a sweep. Lombard with body punches, but at a slow pace. Crowd boo’s some more and the ref stands them up again. Shields fails with another shot and rocks back to guard. Lombard “playing it safe” on top. The ref pleads, “come on let’s do something!” before standing them up with less than a minute left. Joe Rogan calls, “what I see here is a very good fighter doing just enough to win.” Shields hits a knee to the body, and catches a guillotine choke and locks it in! But time expires. Another 10-9 round for Lombard.

Lightweights : Diego Sanchez vs. Myles Jury
Round One: The two exchange jabs and leg kicks, until Sanchez snaps Jury’s head back with straight left and a jab. Jury glances with a body kick. Sanchez with a body kick, and shrugs off a Jury takedown. Jury circling away, and Sanchez taunts as he advances. Sanchez with a 1-2. Counter right hand lands clean from Jury, as does a head kick. Jury with a takedown. Sanchez tries to roll for a heel hook. Jury looking for the back, and they scramble as time expires. Jury with slightly more meaningful strikes down the stretch which may have won him the round. 10-9, Jury.
Round Two: Jury keeps countering with rights and elbows. A brief sequence against the cage goes nowhere. Sanchez is bloodied by a hard right. He keeps trying to march Jury down but is cut with another big right. Sanchez tries a guillotine choke and it looks deep… but Jury signals he’s okay and scrambles to his feet. Straight punching while circling carries the end of the round. 10-9, Jury.
Round Three: Jury with more of the same, totally dominating the standup with straight punching and the occasional kick. Straight right and left hook combo is particularly hard. Jury ducks under a Sanchez rush for a takedown. Sanchez tries to rock back for an armbar but Jury slips away. Sanchez attacks with another guillotine as time expires. 10-9, Jury.

Welterweights : Carlos Condit vs. Tyron Woodley
Round One: Woodley connects with a hard right. Condit circles away to land a glancing body kick but Woodley is walking him down, hits another hard right. They clinch against the cage with Wooodley pressing the action. Body shot from Woodley. Condit turns him, and they trade knees to the body. Woodley gets underhooks, and presses Condit to the cage. Good uppercut by Woodley, and they disengage. Nice straight punches from Condit and a body kick. Woodley with a double leg as Condit tries to advance. Condit looking for “rubber guard” and a triangle. Woodley slams him down. Back up, Condit with a hard right. Another Woodley takedown. Condit looks for the triangle. Woodley backs away. Woodley with a spinning elbow which glances Condit’s shoulder, and they exchange punches as time expires. Condit perhaps did just a little more in an excellent round. 10-9, Condit.
Round Two: They exchange strikes and Woodley with another takedown. Condit stays active with punches from the bottom, but he seems to be wincing. Announcers surmise that he’s injured. Woodley lands a leg kick to the left leg, but falls clutching his right leg? Ref calls the fight and Condit may have blown out his ACL.

Welterweights : Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler (for the vacant UFC Welterweight Championship)
Round One: Hendricks tries a round kick, and Lawler pounces on Hendricks for roundhouse punches. 1-2 from Hendricks. Straight left from Lawler and Hendricks rushes in for a clinch. Against the cage, Hendricks looking for knees as Lawler hangs on to an overhook. They disengage. Hendricks shoots, Lawler sprawls, lands an uppercut. They trade knees against the cage. Good left leg kick from Hendricks. They both paw with their jabs. One-Two from Hendricks. Jab from Lawler, and another. Lawler misses an uppercut. Hendricks looking for the round kick, lands to the leg after missing the body. They clinch against the cage as time expires. Hendricks a bit more active throughout. Hendricks 10-9.
Round Two: More movement from Lawler, who lands a 1-2 out the gate. Hendricks with a hard leg kick. Hendricks with good punches as they clinch and a knee to the body. Leg kick from Hendricks. Hendricks attacks with 1-2’s and knee to the body. Lawler with a straight left. Hendricks lands a straight left. Hendricks shrugs off a takedown and lands another left. Hendricks pawing with the jab as Lawler tries to land a big counter. Good leg kicks from Hendricks which Lawler doesn’t seem to have an answer for. Both guys missing wildly as time expires — Lawler lands a left — but a good knee and leg kick prior punctuates the round for Hendricks. Hendricks 10-9.
Round Three: Hendricks attacking with leg kicks to begin. Lawler returning fire with leg kicks now. 1-2 with a leg kick from Hendricks. Good left uppercut from Hendricks, Lawler jabs. They’re standing right in front of each other but Hendricks landing the better combinations. Big left rocks Hendricks! They continue to exchange, Hendricks backing up and Lawler cracks him again! Hendricks trying to recover. Hendricks lands a knee and a 2-3 as Lawler slows. Hendricks keeps throwing as he moves. Slow pace with half a minute left. They keep pawing jabs as time expires. Lawler, 10-9
Round Four: Both guys landing pawing one-twos. Big left from Lawler, then a left to the body. Hendricks land a punch then a leg kick. Overhand from Lawler. Lawler shrugs off a Hendricks takedown. Right hook from Lawler. Hendricks right eye is bleeding badly. They keep exchanging, Hendricks landing a leg kick which fails to stop Lawler’s advance. Big right uppercut from Lawler. Hendricks lands a combo and Lawler smiles. Jab pops Hendricks’ head back. It’s kind of a game of “Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots” with Lawler outlanding the punching combo’s and Hendricks hitting the occasional leg kick. Hendricks with a takedown but they scramble to their feet. Lawler 10-9.
Round Five: Lawler advancing with his jab to start. Good left from Lawler as Hendricks tries to counter. Hendricks clinches him against the cage, but Lawler controls with the overhook. Good knees to the leg from Hendricks. They’re separated. Almost halfway done and Hendricks lands a great leg kick. Big right hook from Lawler. Big left seems to wobble Lawler. Another big Hendricks left! Uppercut from Hendricks, jab from Lawler but he’s shaken. Big left from Hendricks, who gets a takedown with about a minute left. Hendricks keeps Lawler against the cage for a few punches, likely winning the round, the fight, and the title. Hendricks, 10-9.
