While Super Bowl weekend will still be great, depending on how things play out, it might not be as awesome as MMA fans thought. Remember how recently it was announced that Jon Jones will battle Glover Teixeira at UFC 169, February 1st? Well, apparently someone jumped the gun at the UFC head office.
During a media call Monday, UFC President Dana White announced that not only is Jones-Teixeira not booked for UFC 169, they’re not exactly sure at this juncture when it will happen. In a report from MMA Junkie.com, the UFC boss man was quoted saying:
“That was never, ever a done deal,” White said. “That’s going to be later. That was never a done deal. Our (public relations) people put it out, and they shouldn’t have.”
White also added that the “timing didn’t work out” in terms of getting Jones-Teixeira on that card, and that the fight might take place in March. He also said that Alexander Gustafsson’s next fight could take place around that time, and that Sweden and London, England are being targeted as locations.
Although Gustafsson and Jones engaged in one of the sport’s greatest title fights ever at UFC 165, the light-heavyweight champ and the UFC have elected to give Teixeira his shot. The well rounded fighter has gone 5-0 to date in the Octagon, and is coming off a first round, stoppage win over Ryan Bader at UFC FN 28.
