Dustin Poirier scored one of the most impressive wins of his career tonight at UFC 168, defeating Diego Brandao by TKO at 4:54 of round one at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Poirier, of Louisiana but fighting out of American Top Team in Coconut Grove, Florida, showed the more accurate striking from the opening bell, landing punches and kicks on Brandao. The Fortaleza, Brazil native was buoyed by chants and songs by his fans, and succeeded with an early takedown. But Poirier quickly rose to his feet, and ultimately dropped Brandao with a punching combination late in the first stanza.
Brandao, who failed to make weight, forcing the bout to be rescheduled as a “catch-weight” bout at 151.5 lbs, drops to 18-9. Poirier, a -270 favorite, advances to 15-3.
