While the UFC 166 headliner between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos had plenty edge of your seat moments, Gilbert Melendez and Diego Sanchez took it to another jaw dropping level in terms of entertainment value. If you saw the fight, then you won’t be surprised, not even slightly, to hear that it earned “Fight of the Night” honors.
If you didn’t see the bout, well then the first thing you need to do is to watch it. The lightweights earned an extra $60,000 each for their efforts, which saw Melendez earn a unanimous decision nod from the judges. Sanchez came out blasting in round three, and although the badly cut fighter dropped Melendez, the latter recovered and was soon returning fire.
“Knockout of the Night” and an extra 60K went to John Dodson, for flooring flyweight Darrell Montague in the opening frame. Dodson stunned the UFC newcomer with several hard punches early on, before finishing the deal with just under one minute to go in the first round.
And “Submission of the Night” went to lightweight Tony Ferguson, who after sending MikeRio reeling with a punch, transitioned into a fight ending D’arce choke. Although there were no other submissions on the night, it was still a nicely executed choke.
UFC 166 was hosted by Houston’s Toyota Center and saw heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez stop Junior dos Santos in the main event.
