Jon Jones found himself in a dogfight tonight at UFC 165, as Alexander Gustafsson, to the suprise of many, pushed the champion to the limit over five grueling rounds. But a bloodied Jones would land enough to earn the judges decision, and successfully defend his UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.
Sweden’s Gustafsson, who remarked after the bout “It was an honor to fight the champion,” looked nothing like a (+700) underdog tonight, as he out-landed Jones in the early rounds and shrugged off every Jones takedown attempt. Gustafsson scored several takedowns of his own and boxed well throughout, cutting Jones over the right eye.
But Jones, of New York, would turn the tide, scoring several highlight reel kicks and spinning elbows to open an ugly cut on the challenger’s head. Still, the bout went back and forth. The only round Jones clearly won, without any doubt, was the fifth. This observer scored the first two stanzas to Gustafsson, and had the middle rounds agonizingly close, but leaning to Jones. The judges’ decision was in doubt, and was actually met with several boos as it was read.
It was not only the fight of the night, but also among the UFC’s best title fights in history.
At UFC 165, Jon Jones defeated Alexander Gustafsson by Unanimous Decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) to successfully defend the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.
