The middleweight bout between Francis Carmont and Costa Philippou was dominated by the improved grappling acumen of Carmont, who took his opponent down for ground-and-pound repeatedly en route to a unanimous decision victory.
Carmont attacked with a leg kick to begin the first round, then immediately shot a takedown, beating Philippou up against the fence and in half guard for the duration of the stanza.
The second and third rounds followed mostly the same pattern. Philippou, originally from Cyprus but fighting out of New York, attacked with an armbar and guillotine choke from the bottom, to no avail. Elbows and punches with solid ground control carried the day for the French-born Carmont, now fighting of Quebec, who earned his sixth straight victory.
At UFC 165, Francis Carmont defeated Costa Philippou by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
