At UFC 165, the Welterweight battle between Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson and Chris Clements was a hard-hitting affair which ended with a flourish, as Thompson landed a series of punches to earn a stoppage victory.
“Wonderboy” Thompson, now 8-1 in MMA after a standout career as a kickboxer, used his reach advantage well and also showed improved grappling skills. The (-435) favorite scored two takedowns and advanced to mount in the first round.
Clements, fighting out of his home province of Ontario, landed a few of his signature kicks but struggled to land with any frequency. South Carolina’s Thompson ended the bout with a series of one-two combinations which staggered Clements, now 17-5-1 in MMA, until referee John McCarthy waved the action off at 1:27 of round two.
