Ian McCall returned to form tonight at UFC 163 in Rio de Jainero, darting around the ring and hitting power shots to score a decision victory over Iliarde Santos.
McCall dominated action from the opening bell with a dynamic attack: switching stances, hitting combinations, and avoiding Santos’ repeated right hand leads. But Santos, of Belem, Brazil, landed strikes occasionally, keeping the crowd excited, and mostly defended the American’s takedowns. Late in the second, Santos also hit a nice outside trip takedown of his own, but failed to capitalize.
As is often the case with flyweight division, the pace stayed up in the third round — highlighted by a McCall head kick and a solid left hook.
California’s McCall snapped a two fight losing streak with the victory and improves to 12-4-1. Santos has now lost both his UFC bouts, and falls to 27-8-1.
The judges’ scorecards were 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28.
