Originally rumored to headline the upcoming UFC Rio card, the UFC has decided on a Super Bowl extravaganza card once again. Featherweight champ Jose Aldo (21-1) will look to defend against former lightweight champ Frankie Edgar (14-3-1).
UFC 156 is expected to take place on Feb. 2, 2013 in Las Vegas, NV. No venue has been verified at this time, but the inaugural event has been taking place at Mandalay Bay all but one year for the past eight years.
Originally scheduled to face-off at UFC 153, the bout was side-lined as the champ suffered a minor injury from a motorcycle accident. Now healed and ready to go, Aldo has said to have given up motorcycle riding.
The champ will be entering the bout with an amazing 14-bout winstreak. Aldo was last seen in the cage in front of his home country of Brazil, pulling off a first round KO (via knee and punches) over formerly undefeated Chad “Money” Mendes at UFC 142 this past January.
After Frankie Edgar suffered back-to-back losses to now champ Benson Henderson, he has been convinced to drop down to a weight-class closer to his build. The former champ has proven his resilience time and time again, as he refuses to stay down, never losing by anything else, but decisions.
UFC 156 was originally expected to take place in January in Brazil, the UFC has announced that they still will in fact have a Brazil event, but that event is now looking to not be a pay-per-view card. More on this story on it develops.
