The UFC’s smallest weight class is headed San Jose, with Joseph Benavidez is taking on Darren Uyenoyama at UFC on Fox 7. The card was billed, by fans, as a Strikeforce versus UFC card, because the top two fights have fighters from each respective promotion facing off against each other. The main event is a title unification bout, with UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson taking of Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez, and the co-main event features Daniel Cormier taking on former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir. The card takes place on April 20 at the HP Pavilion.
There was talk of Benavidez getting a title shot after his decision win over Ian McCall. Benavidez thought the title shot was too quick, because he had just lost to current flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson by split decision at UFC 152. In this bout, he will be facing Uyenoyama, who, despite a pedestrian record of 8-3, has been stellar so far in his UFC career. His only losses have come at higher weight classes, because he just dropped to 125 in his last bout. Uyenoyama took a decision win over Norifumi Yamamoto in his Octagon debut, and submitted Phil Harris by rear naked choke in his flyweight debut.
For any fighter that faces a Team Alpha Male rep, they have to worry about the wrestling and ground game, because that is what fighters from that camp have become known for. Uyenoyama is known for his grappling abilities, but sometimes it is harder to submit someone off your back. Plus, Benavidez has the knowledge and abilities of Duane Ludwig at his disposal, who is the new MMA coach at his training camp.
