The Ultimate fighter is coming to Australia. The season will be aptly named ‘The Ultimate Fighter Australia vs UK: The Smashes.’
This will be the second time that the fighters will represent their own country. The last time this had taken place was with the UK vs. US, with Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping as the coaches. The head coaches have not been announced, but one would thing they would have to have, is some significance to the teams they train – just as Vitor and Wanderlei were chosen for the Brazilian edition. It is safe to say that we could see Michael Bisping once again representing his country on the show.
Open tryouts will begin on June 12th for the Australian fighters vying for a spot, and June 15th for the United Kingdom. The actual competition will be filmed in Australia, but beyond that not much is known. The UFC may opt for a pay-per-view that is centered in Australia once the show is over. Marshall Zelaznik, UFC’s Managing Director of International Development, had this to say about the upcoming show.
“Australia and the UK have a fierce, long-standing rivalry, and where better to settle the score than in the UFC’s Octagon. The popularity of MMA has exploded in Australia and the UK, with gyms opening all over the respective countries. There is an athlete in one of those gyms who hasn’t had the chance to show the world what he can do – The Ultimate Fighter is going give to him that opportunity. We’re going to discover the UFC’s future stars, you can bet on it.”
It looks like the UFC is dead set on expanding, and expanding internationally, as UFC president White has said time and time again.
