The best thing about Ryan Hall is that he is far and away the most tricky, crafty and creative submission specialist on the UFC’s roster. The worst thing about Hall is that he is far and away the most tricky, crafty and creative submission specialist on the UFC’s roster – which means that everyone is terrified of going to the ground with him, to the point where they just shut down.
At tonight’s TUF 24 Finale, Hall – he won a season of TUF a while back but has been hibernating ever since – took on the fading veteran Gray Maynard. If you liked grappling, it was entertaining. If you wanted to see two dudes take each other’s heads off, well…
From the outset, Hall made damn sure that Maynard knew that any engagement on the feet would lead to him rolling to the canvas and hunting for a leglock. And though Maynard avoided that leglock attempt in Round 1, Hall followed up with some serious choke threats, and that was enough for the former contender to reconsider his options.
Sadly, those options involved very little commitment to anything, so all three rounds had Hall kicking his foe almost at will, Maynard on the cusp of firing back, and Hall immediately dropping to the canvas to devour him. By the end of last round, Hall had definitely outscored Maynard, but he didn’t win over any fans in the process.
