TUF 18 Finale: Diaz Talks Maynard, Lightweight Cash

Nate Diaz

Things are always interesting when Nate Diaz is in the picture, and not surprisingly, the outspoken fighter is grabbing headlines even before he battles Gray Maynard again at the TUF 18 Finale this Saturday.

In a recent interview with the Las Vegas Sun, here is what Diaz had to say about Mr. Maynard, who he lost via split decision to in 2010 (Diaz also tapped out Maynard during the 5th Season of TUF).

“Gray can be exciting, can be boring as (expletive) — more boring than exciting. I’m not trying to say anything. It’s not that he hasn’t done some things and deserves some of his credit. But he’s not someone who would I tune in to watch.”

Wow. If you need a quick refresher, Maynard is coming off a quick stoppage loss to TJ Grant in May, after earning a split decision win over Clay Guida last June. That fight was widely panned by fans and pundits, but most of the heat was directed at Guida, due to the elusive approach he utilized in the scrap.

Then Diaz was asked about what might come next, provided he takes out Maynard on November 30th. The 28 year-old fighter responded by saying:

“I lost to Thomson and Anthony Pettis is the champ. They’re supposed to be the hot (expletive) right now. Those guys are the guys to beat and on top of it.”

“I was ready to go to 170 pounds. I’m over making weight and all this. I don’t feel I get paid good enough to lose weight all year long. I can make the weight no problem, but I wish I was getting compensated a little better for it. At the same time, I wasn’t going to leave this division letting those two (expletive) run the show.”

It will be interesting to see if Dana White’s asked about Diaz’s comments over the coming days. If you’re wondering, Diaz made $15K for his stoppage loss to Josh Thomson in January, which was $35 grand less than what he was paid when he was decisioned by Benson Henderson last December.

Money aside, Diaz-Maynard II is certainly a big fight for both men. It should be an interesting night.
