If the UFC was considering not tapping T.J. Grant for a title shot if he squeaked by Gray Maynard with a decision win, we’ll never know it, thanks to the lightweight’s impressive stoppage of the veteran contender at UFC 160. It’s difficult not to hand Grant a crack at Henderson after what he’s done in his last few bouts, and Dana White confirmed after the event that indeed, he will get another chance to prove the pundits wrong.
Since the 29 year-old, Nova Scotia fighter is getting married in October, Grant would prefer to fight Henderson before then. While discussing the possibility of the title fight being added to the August 17th, UFC on FS 1 card in Boston, White stated (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“There are four fights we’re looking at right now for that show, and that’s one of them.”
White also added the following about Grant’s first round win over Maymard:
“For T.J. to knock him out the way he did, he earned it tonight. He just turned it on and has been wrecking everybody, literally wrecking everybody.”
The UFC President didn’t offer any details regarding other bouts their considering for UFC on FS 1, but White has stated repeatedly that several high profile fights will be booked for the card. Recently it was revealed that Travis Browne will take on Alistair Overeem at the event, and other bouts scheduled so far include Matt Brown vs. Thiago Alves and Joe Lauzon vs. Michael Johnson
