The injury bug seems to have bitten Thiago Silva yet again. He had just returned after a suspension and multiple injuries in a loss to Alexander Gustafsson, but since taking that fight on short notice they rewarded him with a fight against former champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Now, the search is underway to fill the spot opposite Shogun on the UFC 149 fight card.
According to Dana White they wanted recent UFC newcomer Glover Teixeria to fill that void. Unfortunately there is only one problem according to White,
“With Thiago hurt, we turned to Glover and asked him to go right back in to fight ‘Shogun’ at UFC 149, but ‘Shogun’s’ people are adamantly refusing to take the fight. They want nothing to do with Glover.”
It is relatively unheard of for Shogun to refuse an opponent. The reasons for his dismissal of Glover could be a multitude of things, but according to White he wants nothing to do with him. Don’t give up though as he says, “But that’s the fight Lorenzo and I are trying to put together.” So, there may be hope yet.
Shogun is coming off a close loss to number one contender Dan Henderson, and of course Glover just had that brutal win over Kyle Kingsbury. The problem is that outside of Glover, there is not many people that can fight Shogun near the top ten of the division. Hopefully, they will be able to sort this out and get the match the UFC brass and fans want to see.
