During a recent press conference to promote the Japanese release of “UFC Undisputed 2010″, Japanese Lightweight legend Takanori “Fireball Kid” Gomi stated that he wants and thinks he can defeat current champion Frankie Edgar.
“BJ, and (Kenny) Florian have a jiu-jitsu base so I had a hard time dealing with them but the champion has a wrestling base so I can fight him calmly. I’m aiming for the belt? Yes, I am. I think I can take the belt. Hmmm…I wonder if I’m stronger than the champ?? (smile).”
After this statement, a match was simulated between the two using the “Undisputed” game.
Gomi knocked Edgar out in the first round.
It is unknown as of right now who Gomi’s next opponent will be. With BJ Penn coming off back to back losses (and his history with Gomi well established) perhaps a rematch of their 2003 battle is in store. As of right now, BJ Penn is deciding what his next move will be, but it’s safe to say that a rematch with Gomi would be a crowd pleaser (especially among hardcore MMA fans).
