Although Wanderlei Silva’s recent revelation that he wants to suck the blood of Chael Sonnen seemed like a good way to lock up a bout with the former middleweight, so far, no fight has been confirmed. Sonnen did say that he was only giving Silva 24 hours to accept the bout, which was a deadline the former PRIDE champ missed. Cut “The Axe Murderer” some slack Chael; the guy says he didn’t know.
At any rate, that doesn’t mean fans and pundits aren’t still discussing how a bout between the two would go down. According to Silva’s striking coach, the renowned Rafael Cordeiro, it would’t go terribly well for Sonnen.
“If he fights against Chael Sonnen, I think don’t go past the first round,” Cordeiro said in a recent interview with Rick Lee. “He’s going to knock him out for sure.”
Yes, naturally, Cordeiro is going to pick Silva for the win, but you have to wonder if he truly believes the 36 year-old vet would take out Sonnen in round one, or if he’s just talking up his pupil. It’s probably a bit of both.
When asked about the possibility of Silva retiring, Cordeiro rightfully noted “it’s hard for the guy to retire if he fights and also he won bonus for best fight of the night and the best knockout of the night.”
Silva knocked out Brian Stann at UFC on FUEL TV 8 in March in a bout that will likely be remembered as an “Axe Murderer” classic.
