During the WEC’s first pay-per-view in April, UFC president Dana White was filmed sitting with his hand around the soon to be free-agent Shields. White looked directly at the camera and said “he’s mine.”
Sources close to Strikeforce told Sherdog.com that they have been proactive in planning for Shields defecting to the UFC. It may be a de facto tournament to figure out who should be crowned the new middleweight champ.
Fighters expected to be candidates for the belt include Robbie Lawler,Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Dan Henderson, Jason Miller, Tim Kennedy and Luke Rockhold among others.
Shields departure is not a guarantee as Shields himself has said on InsideMMA that neither company has made an offer as he still technically has two weeks left on his contract with Strikeforce.
