Not only did Stipe Miocic get back on track by defeating Roy Nelson at UFC 161, after being stopped by Stefan Struve last September, but the one sided, UD win earned him a spot in the promotion’s top ten heavyweight ranks. So who does Miocic want to fight next? In an effort to continue his rise up the heavyweight ranks? Apparently it’s Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga.
On the latest edition of “UFC Tonight” here’s what the show’s correspondent Ariel Helwani reported:
“Stipe Miocic wants to fight Gabriel Gonzaga, fresh off his win at UFC 166, where he looked very good.”
As you probably recall, Gonzaga floored Shawn Jordan in the opening round last Saturday, to follow up on the 17 second KO he scored over Dave Herman in July. With the win, the 34 year-old heavyweight has gone 4-1 in his last five fights, and his only loss during that run came against the #5 ranked Travis Browne.
Miocic meanwhile has gone 4-1 to date in the UFC, and aside from his win over Nelson, he also holds victories over Joey Beltran, Shane del Rosario, and Philip De Fries.
So, while Gonzaga isn’t currently ranked in the top ten, Miocic knows that a win over the former contender would be huge addition to his resume.
In addition, if you take a look at the top ten ranks, most of the heavyweights are committed to upcoming bouts or just fought (like Junior dos Santos for example). In other words, Miocic-Gonzaga sounds like a pretty good idea no?
