During yesterdays open workouts, a candid Diego Sanchez told the media that he is eying a title shot, should he get past the fast-paced Jake Ellenberger.
You know, this is a big fight with Jake Ellenberger because I believe he is one of the top guys in the division,” Sanchez said at a recent open workout. “He has more momentum than a [Josh] Koscheck or a [Johny] Hendricks right now, and I think a win over him is going to set me up in a good position in the division and a shot at the title. I have to go in and beat him and I have to beat him convincingly and that’s what I came to Omaha to do,” said Sanchez. “There’s no added pressure fighting him in his hometown.”
Sanchez has been on the rise with back-to-back victories after suffering a title fight in the lightweight division against B.J. Penn at UFC 107 and a decision loss to John Hathaway on his return to welterweight. With victories over top names like Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampman while earning fight of the night honors, Sanchez may be correct in his assumption of a possible interim title shot.
Should Ellenberger or Sanchez put on a dominating performance tonight, we may see the interim title holder, Carlos Condit tested prior to his planned bout against current champ Georges St-Pierre.
