It’s the one fight in the female division that MMA fans are most interested in. 135 pound Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey taking on the former 145 pound champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino. The only issue is both women are unwilling to budge on weight. As Justino ends her one-year suspension, the push for the fight has ramped up to no avail.
For Cyborg the reason is said that she has no fat to cut and claims it to be ‘impossible’ for her frame to cut another 10 pounds, as she currently struggles making 145. However for Rousey, packing on the weight is not ‘impossible’ as Santos claims, but the issues stem from the fact that Cyborg was recently caught with an anabolic steroid in her system. This leaves Rousey unwilling to meet a ‘doped to the gils‘ fighter at 145. Rousey a former Olympian, facing rigorous drug tests, sees inadequate testing for the fighters to exploit in the MMA realms.
“I could, but I’m choosing not to because honestly, I don’t trust any of the drug testing. I’ve been doing this a very, very long time and I was in the Olympics with the most stringent drug testing in the world. You know a lot of those people are doping. There’s new advances in drug testing every single year because people find new ways to cheat. The only way I can really feel like it would be a fair fight is if it’s down at 135. If she’s doped to the gills and making 145, it’s not really that far-fetched for me to think that someone not on steroids could move down a division.” – Via Sherdog Radio
Both women have voiced a strong urge to punch each other in the face as they argue through the media and Twitter. Yet as of now, neither fighter is willing to meet the other on their terms and with possible good reason. Question is do you buy the reasoning, or are the fighters afraid to lose what could potentially be the biggest fight of their careers?
