An intriguing match-up has been added to UFC 153 in Brazil. Rick Story had revealed via Twitter yesterday (7/31/12) that he is set to face Demian Maia in his opponents home country of Brazil. Since the announcement, UFC officials have since verified the match-up. The Rio event will be headlined by a featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Erik Koch on October 13th at the HSBC arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The main event is officially now packed with bouts Alan Belcher vs. Vitor Belfort, Rampage Jackson vs. Glover Teixeira, Jon Fitch vs. Erick Silva and now Story vs. Maia.
Rick Story was on an impressive six fight winning streak in the start of his UFC career, looking to enter contender status early. Unfortunately, a last minute replacement of Nate Marquardt to Charlie Brenneman caused his second loss in the octagon. Then a second loss to Martin Kampmann sent him nearly to the back of the line. He did win a match over Brock Jardine in June, but it did not do much to re-instill confidence of him as a contender. He will now have a second chance to redeem himself against Demian Maia.
Demian Maia is making a quick return after a 47 second TKO win over Dong Hyun Kim in his welterweight debut. He did well at 184 posting a 9-4 record, but after losses to current top contenders Mark Munoz and Chris Weidman. He hopes to make another run at the title in his new found weight class. His debut left much to be desired, and if he can finish he will be the first to do so in Story’s career. A finish here would speak volumes for the 3rd degree blackbelt.
