Sonnen submits Stann at UFC 136 – Play by Play

It was a huge question Chael Sonnen (26-11-1) answered for the fans and press at UFC 136 with his dominating victory over former WEC champion and friend, Brian Stann (11-4). After over a year layoff from the Octagon due to a failed drug test and legal matters, Sonnen proved to still be a top contender in the middleweight division. Here is the live play by play.

Round One:
Chael quickly goes for the double, Stan stuffs him to the fence. Stann is sending hooks to the ribs. Sonnen spins and takes control. Sonnen gets the leg trip takedown into side control. Chael works but gets put to guard. Sonnen takes the back in the scramble, and Sonnen attempts the rear-naked. Sonnen transfers to mount. The two scramble and Sonnen gets a slam from the back. Sonnen in half guard works some elbows. Sonnen moves to side control and drops bombs to finish the round.

Round Two:
Chael quickly gets the double takedown as soon as Stann attempts a low leg kick. Sonnen moves to side control and advances to full mount. Sonnen gets some short punches in but is pushed down to the full guard of Stann. Ref. stands them. Stann lands a big right and Sonnen quickly shoots and is stuffed. Sonnen lifts and drops Stann hard into side control. Sonnnen gets a head and arm and submits Stann.

Sonnen the only man to come close to defeating the reigning middleweight champion Anderson is once again in the running for a title shot. Prior to the bout, UFC president Dana White said that a victory did not guarantee Sonnen the next shot. During his post-fight victory Sonnen calls out Anderson Silva for a Super bowl weekend, “Super Fight” claiming that if he defeats Silva, he must leave the division. Should he lose, Sonnen says he will leave the UFC.
