It was a very methodical striking game between vet. Jay Hieron and former top five contender Jake Ellenberger in front of the Minneapolis crowd. In the end “The Juggernaut” proved to earn vengeance over Heiron, who he lost to in 2006, stopping his 12-0 perfect record.
With both men unable to mount a full attack in the first two rounds, the third round is when caution was thrown to the wind. After some striking success, Ellenberger showed a full mix of skills taking it to the ground, where he opened Hieron with elbows. Hieron looked to have broke his nose around this time as he continually attempted to adjust it to the end of the fight. The last seconds had Ellenberger land a big combo hook that dropped Hieron.
Jake Ellenberger defeats Jay Hieron via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Ellenberger is now back in the win column after suffering a loss in a possible contenders bout against Martin Kampmann at the TUF 15 finale in June. Ellenberger now stands at an outstanding 7-2 in the UFC, including victories over Diego Sanchez, Mike Pyle and Jay Hieron.
