What could have been an awesome fight between middleweight champ Anderson Silva and Demain Maia, turned out to be what many fans and Dana White feel, to be a complete waste.
White did his very best to not show his complete disappointment in who he called “the best pound-for-pound fighter”, Anderson Silva. But during the fight, White left during the fourth round, telling Ed Soares to give the belt to the fighter.
During the post-fight press conference, White stated how embarrassed he was about the main event, and promised to make it up to the fans.
“I apologize, and I will – I don’t know how yet – but I will make this up to the fans who bought this s**t tonight.”
White also stated that even though Silva got a few solid punches on Maia in the first couple rounds, that he didn’t like the fight from the moment it started.
“I didn’t like it from the first minute of the first round,” White said. “Nobody has been more supportive of Anderson Silva than me – talking about him being the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Even after a couple of goofy performances, I’ll call them, I still stood behind him and supported him. I think this guy is incredibly talented, and in the first couple of rounds, he was showboating and doing whatever he was doing, and that’s not what I’m in to. I don’t like it. If you’re that talented, be Mike Tyson. Go in and finish it in two minutes.”
This event brought up memories of past fights with Anderson Silva, such as boring performances with Thales Leites and Patrick Cote, where he did much of the same ‘show-boating’ as tonight. This made many fans question, is he really the best pound-for-pound fighter? Surprisingly, White still thinks so, but he had no issues voicing some concern.
“As mad as I am right now, he’s one of the most talented guys in the business,” White said. “I don’t know what I’m going to do to him right now. I don’t know. I honestly don’t know what to say. I’m so blown away and disgusted and saddened.”
White also made it clear, that this may very well be Silva’s last main event fight for a long time.
“Anderson Silva might be the first champion in history fighting on a prelim,” White said. “How do you sell Anderson Silva after tonight? How do you do it? People don’t want to see that s**t. I don’t want to see it. It makes me sick to my stomach.”
And although this bout definitely not worth the $1000 some fans paid to see it up close, White promises that he will make it up to them…I’m curious to see how.
“I’m going to make it up to the fans – that I guarantee you,” White said. “I just don’t know how yet.”
