Report: UFC Cuts Former Contender Loose

yushin okami

Just like Jon Fitch found out not long ago, a winning record and years as a contender doesn’t ensure a position with the UFC, as Yushin Okami has reportedly been let go by the promotion.

According to a report from MMA Junkie.com, the UFC has confirmed with the outlet that Okami has been released, following his stoppage loss to “Jacare” Souza on September 4th. The defeat ended a three fight winning streak for Okami, which included victories over Buddy Roberts, Alan Belcher and Hector Lombard.

In August, 2011, Okami worked his way into a title fight with former middleweight champ Anderson Silva, but was stopped in the second round. So, the 32 year-old exits the UFC having gone 13-5 in the Octagon, which includes wins over other noted vets like Nate Marquardt, Mark Munoz and Mike Swick among others. Despite his success, Okami’s grinding style didn’t always thrill the MMA masses, which may have been a consideration in the UFC’s decision.

Due to his accomplishments and lengthy run with the UFC, one would think Okami will find work soon with another big stage promotion.
