[Update] The event is now official. As we reported on Mar. 24, Mark Munoz (12-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) vs. Chris Weidman (8-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) will in fact headline UFC on Fuel 4 on July 11 at an undecided venue.
The fight makes sense as both men ride high on four straight in the octagon. Weidmann – undefeated in his eight fight career including a “Submission of the Night bonus” at UFC 131 with an impressive standing guillotine of Jess Bongfeldt. Weidmann was last seen defeating former top contender Demian Maia at UFC on Fox: Evans vs. Davis in Jan. 2012.
Munoz will be returning from a short layoff due to elbow surgery. The injury ironically pulled Munoz from his bout against Chael Sonnen, giving Weidmann the platform to step in and showcase his skill-set and move up the middleweight ladder. “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” will have his hands full with a fellow NCAA division I wrestler and submission artist in Weidman. Prior to surgery Munoz had pulled off a TKO finish of heavy handed brawler Chris Leben in Nov. at UFC 138 in Birmingham, England.
