If you take a look at the betting lines for tonight’s UFC 162 card, one of the night’s biggest underdogs is Rafello “Tractor” Oliveira, who is set to battle lightweight Edson Barboza. Of course, Barboza has gone 5-1 so far in the UFC and has lost just once in his career to date, while Oliveira has gone 3-3 in the Octagon. Originally, Barboza was set to fight noted striker John Makdessi, who is coming off back-to-back wins over Sam Stout and Daron Cruickshank. Oliveira was brought in after Makdessi had to withdraw due to injury.
Oliveira, not surprisingly, is confident heading into tonight’s bout, particularly since he says he’s finally “100%” after a rash of injuries. The BJJ black belt recently had this to say about facing the heavily favored Barboza, in an interview with MMA Junkie.
“I’m not stupid; I know I am the underdog. And I’ve been the underdog before, too. I feel fine. There’s a good reason he’s the favorite. He has more victories than I do. He’s more highly regarded. This sort of thing just makes me hungrier to show everyone what I’m capable of, and prove the doubters wrong. I already knew I’d be the underdog. No problem.”
The “Tractor” also revealed that he spent time training with Jim Miller to prepare for tonight’s bout. Not a bad guy to get a few pointers from.
One would think Oliveira will look to take this fight to the ground considering Barboza’s striking abilities, which if you need a refresher on, check out his UFC 142 bout with Terry Etim…
UFC 162 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
