Rafael Cavalcante and Thiago Silva are set to face each other at UF 162, which takes place in Las Vegas, N.V. on July 6. The card is headlined by a middleweight title fight between Chris Weidman and longtime UFC champion Anderson Silva. Thiago Silva and Cavalcante will be looking for their first wins in a while since their last wins were overturned due to failed drug tests.
Cavalcante fought in May of 2012, when he rematched Mike Kyle. He won the fight in 33 seconds of the first round, but he tested positive for the banned substance stanozolol, which left him banned from MMA for a year. It was unclear whether or not he would even make the transition to the UFC since his name was never on any of the press releases of fighters moving to the organization after the demise of Strikeforce.
This may be Silva’s last chance in the Octagon after multiple losses and failed drug tests have kept him from a win since 2009. In the last five years, Silva has gone 1-3-0-2. After his win over Brandon Vera, he gave a falsified urine sample which kept him out for a year. He lost a five-round decision to Alexander Gustafsson, and then his win over Stanislav Nedkov was overturned when he tested positive for marijuana.
This is just the second match-up announced for the card, but it will most likely be an entertaining one. In a 30 combined fights between the two light-heavyweights, only three have gone to decision. Plus, the fighters have a penchant for knockouts with a combined 21 finishes due to strikes in their 25 combined wins. They may not be as high up in the rankings as they used to be, but they will still be able to put on a show.
