UFC 118: Edgar vs Penn 2 Predictions
UFC 118: Edgar vs Penn 2 is upon us, and we decided to bring back the predictions to help give you some insight on this Saturday nights card.
Now this is not a normal prediction card, as we will be going head to head against mma media site OctagonBuzz.com, MMA Fantasy style. So check us both as we find out who is “The Ulitmate Fighter Predictor!”
Lightweight Championship bout: Frankie Edgar (c) (12-1) vs. B.J. Penn (15-6-1)
Prediction: BJ Penn via TKO – Round 3
Though Edgar has shown to have the faster foot work and better cardio, a vengeful Penn is very dangerous and will likely learn from his past mistakes and be much more aggressive.
Heavyweight bout: Randy Couture (18-10) vs. James Toney (0-0)
Prediction: Randy Couture via submission – Round 1
Couture knows better than to stand with Toney. Couture has been very open about his tactics for the fight. He plans to kick Toney’s lead leg, and as soon as Toney goes to punch, Couture gets the double-leg takedown with ease. Once they hit the ground, the fight is locked in Coutures favor as Toney’s six-month training will not be enough to deal with close to 30 years in grappling experience.
Middleweight bout: Demian Maia (12-2) vs. Mario Miranda (12-1)
Prediction: Demian Maia via submission – Round 1
The two Brazilian’s are known for their submission wins, but Maia will have the advantage on the ground. Between his ADCC wins and his eight fights in the Octagon, Maia should come out on top due to his experience against higher level fighters.
Lightweight bout: Kenny Florian (14-4) vs. Gray Maynard (10-0)
Prediction: Kenny Florian via decision
Florian has shown sharper stand-up then Maynard as of late. Maynard will have the advantage in the wrestling department, but Florian has been training wrestling with the best in business (GSP) to help with that. As if that was not enough, Florian will also have his infamously razor sharp elbows to throw from the bottom.
Welterweight bout: Nate Diaz (12-5) vs. Marcus Davis (17-6)
Prediction: Nate Diaz via submission – Round 2
Davis, a former boxer does have the advantage standing, but Diaz will have the reach and ground game advantage over Davis. Diaz also notably has never been TKO’d or KO’d in his career, showing that he should be able to weather the storm, should he get peppered with punches early.
Preliminary card (Spike TV)
Lightweight bout: Joe Lauzon (18-5) vs. Gabe Ruediger (17-5)
Predicition: Joe Lauzon by submission – Round 1
Much like the Maia – Miranda fight, both men have similar records and skill sets. Once again though, I’m going with the man with more experience in the Octagon against tougher opponents.
Lightweight bout: Andre Winner (11-3-1) vs. Nik Lentz (18-3-2)
Prediction: Andre Winner via decision
Andre Winner may not have as many wars as Lentz but he is a very aggressive fighter and I expect him to push the pace and take control of the fight. Both men are hungry, and this may very well be the fight that surprises many on the under-card. Look out for fight of the night or even KO or submission of the night.
