Post UFC on FOX 5: Dana calls for B.J. to retire and more

Good news in ticket sales, as the UFC on FOX 5 has sold out the Key Arena in Seattle, Washington, bringing in 14,412 fans to the show, for a gate of a little over $1.5 million. That makes it the highest earning UFC on FOX event in terms of live gate while it was beat out by the Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis and the Shogun vs. Vera card. It does not seem like the card could have beaten those figure since it was sold out so the configuration of the seating must not have allowed for more.

The fight night bonuses for the night were put up to $65,000. Scott Jorgensen pulled in a nice payday for having won Fight of the Night and Submission of the Night for his last second submission win. He pulled in a nice $130,000 for that win. His opponent John Albert walked away with the 65k which should soften the blow of the loss a bit.

Yves Edwards finally was allowed to vent his frustration in the cage against Jeremy Stephens after their last fight was cancelled. The ending was thrilling with Edwards knocking Stephens out cold. Matt Brown obviously made some noise, but I think this was a nice tip to the hat for Edwards to earn KO of the Night after the fiasco he had endured in their last scheduled bout.

In fighter news, Dana has called for the retirement of BJ Penn due to him being in shape and still being outclassed. He said ‘a beautiful life, family, and wife are reasons not to fight when he has already proved so much’. Also, Dana agrees with a rematch between Rory MacDonald against Carlos Condit. MacDonald wants the rematch due to the nature of his loss not because he thought the stoppage was bad. Now the ball is in Condit’s corner.

Lastly, there is rumors floating around that Dan Henderson’s knee is not healed. White said if he is not healed, it is completely possible for Alexander Gustafsson to step into the match against Machida. Gustafsson does not want to wait around for the title shot if it means sitting out for around six months, because he would rather stay active.
