Pettis vs. Thomson title fight off, new headliners step in

Nate Diaz

Bad news for the upcoming UFC on Fox card in Sacramento, CA on Dec. 14. Fans may have expected to see the local fan favorite Josh Thomson fight Anthony Pettis for the lightweight title, however a knee injury has forced the champ to bow out. Stepping in to help save the card will now be Demetrious Johnson versus Joseph Benavidez. Originally scheduled for the TUF Finale on Nov. 30, Nate Diaz versus Gray Maynard now takes the headlines of the Finale.

Interestingly, the Maynard/Diaz match-up is the third time they’ve been matched up, but will be billed as their second. Diaz defeated Maynard via guillotine on the fifth season of The Ultimate Fighter, however TUF fights are considered ‘exhibition fight,’ therefore it’s not added to fighter records. The second showing ended with Maynard winning a controversial split-decision. Although it’s not in the books, we will see a rubber match between the lightweights on Nov. 30.
