It’s only been a couple of days since UFC Tonight relayed the news that BJ Penn is considering a return at lightweight, and not surprisingly, fighters are stepping up to say they want to welcome the legend back. After all, if you’re looking to add a big name to your resume, there aren’t many bigger in the sport than BJ Penn.
Rising lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov is one of the men who is calling to fight Penn–if and when the 34 year-old comes back–as the 24 year-old tweeted:
“I heard that the legend returns .. I will be glad to meet him. He is the best lightweight fighter in the history, I’m his fan since childhood, I deserve this fight.”
Although the 20-0 fighter has impressed since arriving in the UFC, and put on an awe inspiring grappling clinic versus Abel Trujillo at UFC 160, Penn may not agree with Nurmagomedov’s assessment.
Another notable lightweight who has said he wants to fight Penn next is rugged vet Evan Dunham. The 31 year-old lightweight also shared his desire to lock horns with the decorated fighter by tweeting:
“With all respect if BJ Penn needs an opponent when he returns I am more than will. Would be an honor to fight him.”
If Penn comes back, he’ll be looking to rebound from consecutive and one sided unanimous decision losses versus Rory MacDonald and Nick Diaz while competing at welterweight. It will be interesting to see who Penn wants to fight at 155 pounds, and whether it will be another established star or an up-and-coming fighter. Of course, the UFC will have some input as well…
