Following the news of Jon Jones inking a huge multi-year sponsorship deal with Nike, news has came of the drop of boxing star Manny Pacquaio’s Nike line. Whether the simultaneous moves are connected are unverified. Jones is now the first mixed martial artist to reach the mainstream sponsorship deal with the sport apparel giants, leaving UFC president Dana White ecstatic over the deal.
“It’s huge, it’s really big,” White told MMAWeekly.com following UFC 150.”
Though some may see this as a shift in mainstream popularity for MMA from Boxing, President White has been quick to admit in the past that his adoration for the sports roots from Boxing.
“They’re shutting down the Manny Pacquiao line and starting up the Jon Jones line,” White revealed. “I don’t know why they shut down the Pacquiao line, but they did and that (expletive) was selling like hot cakes. I got Manny Pacquiao (expletive) from Nike.”
Jones’ Nike deal is expected to release a signature shoe, along with a full clothing line. Keep an eye out for a preview come Sept. 1 in his walkout to fight Dan Henderson at UFC 151.
