The Nogueira brothers have been the target of Chael Sonnen’s verbal warfare in the past, and most recently when Antonio Rogerio Nogueira dropped out of his UFC 161 bout with “Shogun” Rua, the “American Gangsta” didn’t miss the opportunity. In case you’ve forgotten, Sonnen made it be known via Twitter that he would step up and fight “Shogun”, since “Brazilian chicken is off the menu.”
Well, now that Nogueira has almost recovered from his back injury, MMA Fighting.com recently asked “Lil Nog” if he’s interested in fighting Sonnen when he returns. The 37 year-old vet, who is coming off wins over Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz, reportedly stated:
“That fight doesn’t interest me because I want to fight the best, and there are a lot of fighters that are better than him, including Shogun, Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans,” he said. “Chael talks trash, he’s pure marketing. If we keep talking about him, that’s what he wants. He fought three times for the world title and got beat up. He tried to make his name when Anderson was fighting him injured, and we all saw what happened in the second fight.”
It’s kind of too bad Nogueira feels that way, as a lot of people would like to see that fight, although Sonnen is apparently planning to return to middleweight any ways. Nogueira also relayed that he’d like to rematch Rua later this year if possible, who of course, will fight Sonnen at UFC Fight Night 26. When asked for his prediction on the August 17th bout, Nogueira offered this:
“Sonnen may take him down twice, but he won’t be able to do that for five rounds. He will need to stand at some point of the fight and Shogun will tag him. I believe Shogun will knock him out.”
Guess we’ll find out soon enough. UFC Fight Night 26 will be hosted by Boston’s TD Garden Arena and will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1.
