Demetrious Johnson had won one of his best performances to date at UFC on FOX 8, as the flyweight champion outscored John Moraga throughout much of their main event before tapping out the challenger in round five. Not only did Johnson impress with his wrestling abilities, as Moraga knows a thing or two about that as well, but he silenced critics (for now) who were blasting him for not finishing fights.
While the win was important for Johnson, and one could certainly say the UFC, the card’s ratings were reportedly the lowest to date for a FOX card. Of course, that shouldn’t be thrown entirely at Johnson’s feet as he wasn’t the only one fighting, but naturally critics are going to wonder if there’s a correlation.
One man who has faced Johnson not once, but twice, is Ian McCall, who isn’t lacking in the ability to promote a fight. After all, when you’re nickname is “Uncle Creepy”, people are going to take notice. While speaking to MMA Junkie.com Radio recently, McCall had this to say about Johnson, and why he believes the champ’s bandwagon isn’t overflowing.
“He’s a dork, man. He’s a great athlete, don’t get me wrong. He’s just socially awkward.”
“But he’s getting better, and I say this as advice, because it would help his career and make him more money and fans would like him more.”
McCall went on to note that Johnson is a “super nice guy” while he himself is “a spiteful, snide prick.” Now that’s what you call candid.
“Uncle Creepy” will battle Iliarde Santos Saturday night at UFC 163, in what is a huge fight for McCall. The top ranked flyweight is winless in his last three bouts.
