Matt Mitrione snapped a two fight losing streak last Saturday by demolishing Philip De Fries in just 19 seconds.
But Mitrione is no longer headlining news articles due to his recent fighting success.
Mitrione made an appearance Monday on Ariel Helwani’s “The MMA Hour.” During his time on the show he made comments on MMA’s first transgender fighter. The UFC heavyweight called Fallon Fox a “lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak.”
“It’s an embarrassment to us as fighters, as a sport, and we all should protest that,” Mitrione said. “The woman that’s fighting him, props to you. I hope you beat his ass, and I hope he gets blackballed and never fights again because that’s disgusting and I’m appalled by that.”
The UFC wasn’t exactly thrilled with Mitrione’s comments, and soon after made a statement regarding his actions.
“The organization finds Mr. Mitrione’s comments offensive and wholly unacceptable and – as a direct result of this significant breach of the UFC’s code of conduct – Mr. Mitrione’s UFC contract has been suspended and the incident is being investigated. The UFC is a friend and ally of the (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community, and expects and requires all 450 of its athletes to treat others with dignity and respect.”
In the UFC’s defense, I don’t know what is worse, the comments Mitrione made, or the timing with which he made them. The UFC just announced a code of conduct for its fighters under contract in January. Every fighter comes into the sport with the desire to become a champion. Champions simply do not conduct themselves in that manner. Georges St. Pierre sets the bar for the way champions should act – humble, wise, kind, respectful, positive. I understand Mitrione is speaking his mind on a topic that is very controversial, but he had to realize that these comments would lead to some type of punishment knowing how serious the UFC is in regards to gay, lesbian, and transgender issues. It looks like “Meathead” should have abided by one of the wisest old sayings that is an essential building block in creating a disciplined person: “If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say it all.”
