UFC 158: Matches to Make from the Main Card

Nate Marquardt vs. Josh Koscheck

Marquardt claimed to have looked past his opponent in his last loss, but there is nothing he can say about getting beaten by Ellenberger. He may just be past his prime at this point and unable to compete with the up and comers. A match between Koscheck and Marquardt could be a “loser leaves the promotion match” that the UFC likes to put on.

Jake Ellenberger vs. Demian Maia

Ellenberger staked his claim for a title shot, but unfortunately for him Johny Hendricks has that locked up. The only other person close to a shot at 170 is Maia, so it seems logical for the two to be matched up for the next title shot after the Hendricks and Georges St. Pierre fight.

Carlos Condit vs. Martin Kampmann

Condit and Kampmann had a very close fight back in 2009, and both of them have stuck around at the top of the division since then. A lot of people believe that Condit won the fight against Hendricks, and many people think the same thing about Kampmann in his fight with Condit. Plus, this rematch seems more exciting than the one with Rory MacDonald.

Nick Diaz vs. winner of Michael Bisping vs. Alan Belcher

Diaz was not very clear on if he would retire, but he made it clear that he is tired of fighting up and comers who try to take his head off. He was very interested in fighting Anderson Silva, and that is honestly more intriguing than a match between GSP and Silva. He cannot get an instant title shot, but if he won a bout or two he could get the fight. So match him up with the winner of Bisping and Belcher, because then he will be fighting an MMA veteran who will not hold him down, and the win will get him a step closer to Silva.

Johny Hendricks vs. Georges St. Pierre

The fight needs to happen, because Hendricks’ path to the title was even worse than Fitch’s path. Hendricks had one loss in his rise to the top, but he also had five finishes in which two were huge knockouts. He poses a lot of problems with his Division 1 wrestling, one-punch knockout power and confidence, and that will make him very dangerous in his title fight with GSP.
