Since Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson have been around the MMA block and picked up championship belts along the way, the UFC 161 headliner is a compelling bout, even if both men are coming off decision losses. All this week Fightline.com has been posting video interviews by RM Sport’s Rick Lee, which has featured Jake Ellenberger, Phil Davis and now Mark Munoz, giving their thoughts on Saturday’s fight.
Due to the grappling credentials and abilities of both Evans and Hendo, it’s not surprising to hear Munoz relay he’s “a fan of both these fighters”, since he’s also an experienced wrestler and former NCAA Division 1 champ. In terms of what are the keys to victory for both men, the 8th ranked middleweight offered these insights:
“You’re going to see fireworks from him; you’re going to see his relentlessness in the clinch, with cage work, even with some ground-and-pound,” Munoz noted about Hendo, who is coming off a split decision loss to Lyoto Machida. “I believe that if he can keep the distance, if he can look for times where he can land that overhand right he’ll have his way with the fight.”
“On the flip side with Rashad, Rashad’s got to use his elusiveness, he’s got to use his movement to be able to hide behind his devastating punches, because we’ve seen knockout power with Rashad,” Munoz added about Evans, who is looking to rebound from a UD defeat versus Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. “That only happens when he’s able to move and evade punches and counter with an overhand right or a left hook. He’s really good at that and he’s been exemplifying some wrestling along the way as well.”
Hard to argue with that assessment. You can see the entire interview by heading here.
UFC 161 will be hosted by the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba and the main card will be available via pay-per-view.
