Right now, Mark Hunt is making his final preparations for his Interim Heavyweight Championship bout on Saturday, against Fabricio Werdum in Mexico City at UFC 180.
The man they call “The Super Samoan” is a sizable underdog for the fight, about three-to-one by most outlets. But the New Zealand-born, Australia-based slugger has beaten the odds before; often on the strength of his massive punching power.
That’s how it’s always been, it seems.
Not many gave Hunt much of a chance back in 2001 as he entered the Tokyo Dome to compete in the K-1 World Grand Prix Finals tournament, especially when he was seeded to face the highly touted Jerome LeBanner in the first round. But he knocked LeBanner senseless with a right hand, then won another two bouts, earning the coveted title of K-1 Grand Prix champion.
On Saturday at UFC 180, Hunt will become the first K-1 Grand Prix champion to contend for a UFC championship. A historic win would secure his place among the all-time greats.
All it takes, is one shot.
That’s also the concept a guy who calls himself Mr UFC Trailers had when he made this preview, with a nod to 1980’s video game sensation “Duck Hunt.” Watch out for that promoter looking for your PPV cash at the end… and that dog too…
