It was something of a coming out party for Luke Rockhold last night at UFC on FOX 15 in New Jersey.
The middleweight from Santa Cruz, California enjoyed his first UFC main event victory — using his grappling acumen to dominate, and eventually earn a submission win, against Lyoto Machida.
When it was time to pass out the UFC’s traditional post-fight bonuses, Rockhold was not surprisingly, among the honorees.
The promotion awarded two “Performance of the Night” honors: one to Rockhold, and the other to rising featherweight star Max Holloway (pictured above).
It was the second straight honor for Rockhold, who also earned “Performance of the Night” in his last Octagon appearance: a submission win over Michael Bisping last November. Earlier last year, he won “Knockout of the Night” with a victory over Costas Philippou.
For Holloway, who scored a third round submission victory last night over longtime featherweight contender Cub Swanson, last night was the third post fight bonus. The Hawaiian, now on a six-fight winning streak, won a Performance of the Night and a Knockout of the Night last year.
The UFC also passed out a “Fight of the Night” honor last night, to light heavyweights Gian Villante and Corey Anderson. The two combined for a back-and-forth standup battle, mostly carried by the leg kicks of Villante. Villante eventually landed a punching combination to earn a knockout victory.
Each post-fight bonus winner earns an extra $50,000.
