While many folks throughout the MMA world are still discussing the UFC’s decision to release #6 ranked middleweight Yushin Okami, it’s being reported that the promotion has also let TUF 16 finalist Mike Ricci go.
The news comes approximately nine months after the Tri Star fighter lost by unanimous decision to Colton Smith in the TUF 16 finale last December. Yahoo.com was the first to report Ricci’s release.
More recently, of course, Ricci dropped a split decision loss to Myles Jury at UFC 165 on September 21st. The loss came after Ricci scored a UD win over Colin Fletcher at UFC 158 in March.
“The Martian” competed at welterweight during TUF 16, and won the show’s “Knockout of the Season” for his victory over Neil Magny, before returning to 155.
The 27 year-old has been released while holding a record of 8-4, which includes losses to Pat Curran and Daron Cruickshank.
So this is another move that may surprise some folks, although at 155 the pressure is always on to either win or put on thrilling performances. Due to Ricci’s UFC and TUF experience, however, he probably won’t have difficulty finding work with a bigger promotion.
